Depression is an absolutely common however severely serious mood disorder that can affect how one feels, thinks, and handles day-to-day routine activities. sadness is so problematic that it can lead to so many emotional & physical issues and can most certainly affect the person’s functional & operational efficiency at work, home, or even in social circles.

Often, people confuse depression with just feeling sad, dull, or low. But in reality, depression, which is also considered a major depressive disorder, is more than just feeling sad, dull, or low. It is a lethal mental health problem that can lead to people losing their lives.

Major Misconception about Depression

Many people across different cultures, religions, and social fabrics believe that an evil spirit or jinn possesses someone who suddenly behaves oddly, goes through a rough patch, or acts weirdly. This belief is widespread globally. Although some view possession as irrational and nonsensical based on cultural context, they don’t always see every instance of demonic possession as a sign of mental illness.

Anthropological View on Demonic Possession & Depression

The most ancient way of attributing bodily & mental health issues is being possessed by demons or evil spirits. This whole idea of the relation between demonic or spirit possession and mental illness goes back to the historical context as well.  In fact, in Islam, most scholars believe that jinns can possess the human body while some tend to differ with it and believe that jinns cannot easily possess any human body but can definitely disturb a person’s actions, behaviour, or situations.

Anthropological literature in Islam and other religions suggests that people consider jinns, witchcraft, and the evil eye as main sources of mental and physical illnesses, such as epilepsy and madness. Since jinns are believed to be made of smokeless fire, they are considered fundamentally impossible to be seen by the human eye.

Iblees also known as Satan or Shaytaan is also attributed as the ultimate evil jinn because he is also made of Fire and Prophet Hazrat Muhammed (SAW) also said that ‘The Shaytaan flows through the son of Adam like his blood.’  This is a clear indicator that jinns can possess the human body however, some nice jinns are Muslim in nature and do not tend to enter into a human body.

Depression Causes or Symptoms & Similarity with Demonic Possession

The common symptoms of depression and possession are somewhat similar, leading to confusion and misconception about their interlink. The symptoms include feeling sad / having an off mood, loss of interest in social activities, drastic changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, trouble in sleeping, low energy, increased fatigue, scattered thought process, even thoughts of suicide, psychosis, hysteria, mania, Tourette syndrome, epilepsy, schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder; this includes involuntary or uncensored behaviour.

Treatments

Traditionally, people have cured depression by practicing exorcism of jinns, wearing amulets, or seeking help from fake faith counselors.

Some people resort to taking antidepressants to cope up with it. And, these anti-depressants do help some times. But some people become addicted to these antidepressants and end up relying on them, leading to toxic addiction and worsening depression.

However, the contemporary science has different solution to treat depression. These treatments are Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counselling, antidepressant medications, and Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Nonetheless, depression can be cured through medical or psychological counseling, as well as spiritual healing. Either or both can help a person cope up with acute or mild depression. Psychological and spiritual counselling can bring the person from the deep darkness back into bright light.

Why seeking Professional help is important?

Well, between 85 percent and 95 percent of depressed people who seek professional help have eventually responded absolutely well to treatment. Also, seeking professional help for this mental disorder is heavenly important because seeking help is a gateway to recovery. Also, going to a fake faith counsellor or choosing witchcraft or talismans is not at all a great idea.

Conclusion

It is very important to develop understanding on depression for dismissing myths & misconceptions surrounding this thoroughly complex mental illness. While cultural or anthropological belief sets have their own merits or demerits. Depression, demons, demonic possession, evil eye, evil spirits, jinns, ghosts, and black magic are all different facets. Depression is a medical problem while the rest of all these are spiritual issues. Confusing or excusing medical illness with spiritual problems can only mislead you.

For depression, seek professional help, whether psychological or spiritual. The seriousness of this issue demands professional assistance, empathy, and support. However, for spiritual problems, seek Allah Almighty’s guidance for demonic issues. Avoid witchcraft and talismans as they only mislead.
