Allah (God) has made night a blessing for us to rest and rejuvenation, providing a peaceful environment for sleep. Whereas the day is meant for work, striving, and seeking livelihood.

Allah (God) has created the sun and the moon.  He made the rising, setting, and movement of the sun and moon with precise measure, enabling human beings to easily calculate years, months, days, hours, minutes, and even seconds. Moreover He has created and made the stars as your guide through the darkness of land and sea.

He further tells us in the Quran he has made the day to explore and work and the night for rest, recharge, refresh, peace, protection and cover and the last hours of the night for introspection and the time He hears your supplications (Du’a) and prayers.

The Quran beautifully explains the night as a blessing of Allah (God)  in the following verses.

And We made your sleep [a means for] rest,- (78:9) – and made the night as clothing (cover), – (78:10) – and made the day for livelihood.  – (78:11)

Quran (Surah An-Naba: 78:9-11)

Here are a few more verses from Quran abou night, day, Lunar and Moon Calendar and Stars.

It is Allah Who has made the night for you to rest in and the day bright. Surely Allah is ever Bountiful to humanity, but most people are ungrateful. – (40:61)

There is also a sign for them in the night: We strip from it daylight, then—behold!—they are in darkness.  – (36:37) – The sun travels for its fixed term. That is the design of the Almighty, All-Knowing.  – (36:38) – As for the moon, We have ordained ˹precise˺ phases for it, until it ends up ˹looking˺ like an old, curved palm stalk. – (36:39) – It is not for the sun to catch up with the moon,1 nor does the night outrun the day. Each is travelling in an orbit of their own. – (36:40)

He causes the dawn to break, and has made the night for rest and ˹made˺ the sun and the moon ˹to travel˺ with precision. That is the design of the Almighty, All-Knowing. – (6:96) – And He is the One Who has made the stars as your guide through the darkness of land and sea. We have already made the signs clear for people who know.  – (6:97) –  And He is the One Who originated you all from a single soul,1 then assigned you a place to live and another to ˹be laid to˺ rest. We have already made the signs clear for people who comprehend.  – (6:98)

Here’s a Six Steps Guide or Etiquettes for daily Night Sleep:

Steps To Prepare for Daily Night Sleep

Lets Start

CLOSE DOOR

Close the door, lock it.

Turn off lights.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“When night falls, or when you are about to sleep, extinguish your lamps, close your doors, and cover your food and drink.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

  The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Cover your vessels, tie your water skins, extinguish your lamps, and close your doors, for the Shaytan does not open a closed door or untie a tied knot or uncover a vessel.”
(Sahih Muslim)

COVER FOOD PANS

In Islam, it is sunnah and hence recommended to cover food and drink containers at night as a precautionary measure for both physical and spiritual reasons.

Use lids, cloths, or other coverings to protect food and drink. If a proper cover is unavailable, the Prophet (ﷺ) advised even a simple gesture:

“Cover your vessels, even if it is only by placing a piece of wood across them.”
(Sahih Muslim)

  • Protection from Contamination: Covering food prevents contamination by dust, insects, rodents, or other harmful substances that may enter the food or drink overnight.

  • Protection from Spiritual Harm by Evil Jinns:  The  Islamic teachings highlight the presence of unseen evil beings like jinns and shayatin (devils) and the harm they can cause to humans. It is believed that uncovered food can be exposed to the influence of evil Jinns, which may lead to harm or impurity.
Uncovered containers are thought to attract evil jinn. Consuming a food influenced by evil Jinn may expose a person to negative energies or even harm from evil or malevolent Jinn.

ABLUTION – WUDU

performing ablution (wudu) before sleeping is highly recommended as it carries spiritual and practical benefits. The practice is derived from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and serves to purify the body and soul before resting.

Unable to Sleep - Causing Strain & Depression

The devil seeks to keep us awake at night by disrupting our normal life cycle and drawing us into unhealthy and destructive habits for our health and soul, which can distance us from the blessings of Allah and weaken our physical, spiritual, and mental state.

The devil tries to propagate unhealthy habits, sinful acts at night because it is a time when people may feel less accountable, more isolated, they get a feeling no body is watching. This is a devils trap.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) advised against staying up unnecessarily at night:
“There is no intelligence better than planning, no piety better than restraint, and no goodness better than good character. And staying up at night for no reason is one of the causes of loss.”
(Reported in Adab al-Mufrad)

“O Allah the stars have gone far away and the eyes are rested. You are Alive and Infinite, You do not slumber nor does sleep overtake You. Oh Alive and the Everlasting One, grant me rest tonight and let my eyes sleep (close).
